Narrative Assessment - Problem Solving

Narrative Assessment                 Date: 15.6.18
Learners:  Shokrullah                  Learning Coach: Megan Croll - LH6
Learning Area:  Maths Problem Solving
Learning Observed
This is a narrative assessment of collaborative learning during a maths problem solving session.  In Term 1, we introduced the learners of LH6 to Kagan Structures and grouped the learners into four colour groups according to their strengths and capabilities.  We also unpacked how to solve maths word problems by using the ‘CUBE’ strategy (Using Language, Symbols and Text).

At the beginning of each session, Shokrullah is invited to find the other learners from his group
and get organised with the necessary materials (Managing Self). We then introduce the maths
problem with the expectation that Shokrullah will  connect with the others in his group while
solving the problem.  Today, the learners were given the following problem:

All four members in Shokrullah’s group were asked to use the ‘CUBE’ strategy to find out the
important information in the problem.  They then began working independently to solve this
problem. The group were encouraged to share their thinking with each other so that they
would have an opportunity to support one another in a more collaborative way.

Evidence of learning

While others in the group were using numbers to find the solution, Shokrullah drew pictures
of the fish, mermaid and octopus.  Although this demonstrated that he was thinking about the
problem, he was unable to proceed with solving it.

Next Steps:
*  Share his own ideas with the other members of his group
*  Listen carefully when other learners are sharing their learning
*  Seek support from more able learners in his group

NZC Achievement Objective:
Writing Level 2 - Purpose & Audience
- Constructs texts that demonstrate a growing awareness of audience and purpose through
appropriate choice of content, language and text form
- Expects the texts they create to be understood, responded to, and appreciated by others
Learning Observed
A popular learning activity with many of the LH6 learners is our ‘Writing’ Challenge’.  It begins
with a writing prompt and the learners are given up to 20 minutes to write about anything, so long
as it connects in some way with the prompt.  The learners enjoy being given the opportunity to
express their ideas in writing - especially when it is for an authentic audience.

After writing, we pair the learners up and they share their writing with each other.  After each pair
has decided who has written the best piece, they then join up with another pair and the ‘winners’
each read their writing to each other.   This process repeats itself until eventually there are two groups
- each with the ‘winning’ piece of writing.

There is much excitement between the learners as they compete against each other in the writing
challenge - cheering on the members in their team and debating who has the winning piece of
writing.  During this time, the learning coaches encourage collaboration between the learners to listen
carefully each other and ensure that they  choose fairly - not just because the writer is their friend.
Evidence of Learning
Today, Shokrullah’s writing was enjoyed by his peers.  He made it all the way to the final challenge
against Cindy… and won!

Shokrullah is reading his story while being supported by his ‘team’.

Next Learning Steps
-  Take your writing to the next level by including descriptive words (adjectives) and figurative language,
    e.g. similes
-  Share your writing skills with others to help improve their writing
